Greece

This year our travel adventure is all about Greece.  I fell hard for this country and the people on my first backpacking trip to Europe in 1973 and happily when Brian and I were first here together in ’83 he was equally  smitten.  We have been back a couple of times for 3 week holidays but now after an absence of 12 years are here for 9 leisurely weeks.  Oh I do love the luxury of time being ‘jubalados’ allows!

It is so good to be back in this country. The Greeks are as welcoming as ever and we are happy to be supporting their economy.  If you are hesitating on coming here because of the negative news headlines please reconsider.  It is a good time to be here.

Athens

When you see this view from your hotel rooftop bar you can only be one place in the world.

And it looks stunning in the daylight as well.

Although there is some classical site to see around every corner there are other things to enjoy about Athens  - like food and drink.   We first found this milk bar which has been in the same location since 1932 in ’83  and now have to get there at least once every time we are in Athens.  Best rice pudding and yogurt ever and even better with a Greek Coffee.

To me these baskets are synonymous with Greece and it made my heart race when I saw this display on a small street near the Central Market.  Don’t expect to find anything else but baskets for sale here.

The terracotta rooftops of the Plaka neighbourhood as seen from the Acropolis.

A quiet traditional taverna tucked away on a side street in the Plaka across from the Music Museum.  Both are worth checking out and not on the usual haunts for tourists.

The Temple of Hephaestus in the Athenian Agora

We finally made it out to Cape Sounion to see The Temple of Poseidon.

Next up Delphi and Olympia.  But first a refreshing beer is in order.  Yamas!
